Vintage Yahyali Village Carpet – Turkey

Product code :1851

Size : 1,15m x 2,08m (3,77feet x 6,82feet )

The Turkish mountain town of Yahyalı is considered to be one of the most important weaving centres in eastern CAPPADOCIA. The colours in Yahyali carpets are an immediate indicator of their origin. The ground color is either deep scarlet, burgundy or midnight blues but all are unmistakable. There is almost always a thin line bright gold in the borders, a small but highly distinctive feature, and another of bright green in the subsidiary shades.

Anatolian women and girls transpose all their feelings and thoughts into carpets by transforming the knots into motifs and attributing certain meanings to each one of them. Yahyali carpets are no exception, and even modern Yahyali carpets are highly recognizable for the reintroduction of the ‘village scene’ borders, which incorporate houses and mosques. Bold central medallions with strong geometric lines are also typical, though Yahyali is also famous for its niched prayer design carpets. These carpets are renowned for a balanced distribution of motifs, a very high wool quality and a finer and tighter weave than most Turkish village carpets.Natural dyes are still significantly used in Yahyali carpets. These wonderfully rich colours are typically produced from vine leaves, wild mint, madder root, walnut shells and wild berries, giving rich saturated colour tones that are one of the quality indicators of this well respected carpet group.
